College Services provides academic administration and technology support to the University's schools, as well as to Heads of School, academic staff, and research students. The team is committed to providing effective and efficient services in support of the strategic objectives of the Schools and University, with a focus on best practises and continuous development.

The Materials and Environmental Analytical Platform may be used to chemically analyse and physically characterise a variety of environmental components, including geological materials, soil, water, and biota. This platform also houses the Petrographic Preparation Facility for the preparation of geological and other mineralized material for microscopic examination, as well as the UWA X-ray Diffraction Facility for mineralogical analysis and structure determination using powder diffraction and single crystal diffraction instrumentation. Resources are available on this page for both teaching and research.

Job Responsibilities

In this position, under general direction, you will be required to conduct high quality elemental analysis of soil, water and plant material to support research and academic activities.  You will be required to assist with the operation, training and supervision of users in the safe operation of analytical instrumentation, relevant protocols, procedures and preparative techniques.

In addition, you will be required to:

• Proactively maintain laboratory equipment.
• Maintain stocks of, and purchase chemicals and consumables to support analytical activities.
• Under direction, prepare and verify calibration solutions for a variety of instrumental techniques.
• Follow principles of good laboratory practice.
• Maintain and encourage a pro-active attitude to safety in the workplace at all times.

Job Requirements

• Year 12 or equivalent competency.
• Relevant practical experience in an analytical laboratory conducting nutrient and/or elemental analysis of soil, plant or water samples desirable
• Experience in nutrient analysis using flow injection instrumentation, or elemental analysis using ICP-OES as well as other wet chemical techniques desirable
• Experience in the use of laboratory instrumentation software.
• Attention to detail with a focus on data quality and workflow efficiency.
• Well-developed organisational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
• Well-developed skills in the use of Microsoft excel and other MS Office programs.
