Stephen G. Wozniak had always wanted to build his own computer, and in 1975 the first commercially successful microcomputer, the Altair 8800, which came as a kit and employed the newly developed microprocessor chip, made that goal suddenly attainable.

Wozniak developed a design for his own microcomputer very rapidly after being encouraged by his peers at the Homebrew Computer Club, a San Francisco Bay area group centred around the Altair. In 1976, Wozniak, then 26 years old, and Steve Jobs, then 21 years old, a former high school classmate, shifted production operations to Jobs' family garage after the Hewlett-Packard Company, where Wozniak was an engineering intern, displayed no interest in his invention. Apple was the name of Jobs and Wozniak's company. Wozniak and Jobs each sold one of their programmable calculators to raise money for working capital. Their initial prototype was just a functioning circuit board, but at Steve Jobs's demand, the 1977 model was a standalone device in a custom-molded plastic container, as opposed to the intimidating steel boxes of other early computers. Along with other features, the Apple II had a colour display, making Wozniak's invention the first microprocessor with widespread appeal.
