Friends Paul Harding and Jonathan De Jong established Fantastic Furniture in 1989 as a patio furniture market stall in Sydney's Parklea Markets. Two years later, the first Fantastic Furniture retail store opened at Birkenhead Point.

The following year after opening, The Fantastic Lounge Factory started producing Australian-made couches and lounges for Fantastic Furniture.

In the years that followed, the business had trouble keeping up with demand, and in 1996 it went into administration. Later, the business was acquired and reorganised by Peter Brennan, Peter Draper, and Julian Tertini. Over the coming years, a number of Fantastic Furniture stores opened around NSW.

Fantastic Furniture acquired the NSW-based mattress producer Royal Comfort Bedding in 2006 so that it could produce its mattress line in Australia.
