In 1919, Eglantyne Jebb, a trailblazing sociologist and teacher, established Save the Children in England. Eglantyne, who had a clear vision for children's rights, penned what she considered to be the basic rights of every child in 1923. The League of Nations, the founder of the United Nations [UN], issued this strong declaration in 1924, and it currently serves as the foundation for the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
These fundamental rights still serve as the cornerstone for all we do today, nine decades later. Eglantyne was a pioneer for child health and revolutionised the way we treat children at a time when women had only recently gained the right to vote.
Our first Australian office established in Melbourne the same year Save the Children was founded in England to help refugees displaced by war in Europe. Throughout order to help children in Europe and the Middle East, state divisions and additional Australian branches were founded during the course of the following 50 years. In Australia, improving children's health and education became a top concern in 1951. Among our early Australian projects were welfare centres and preschools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Victoria.
We gave our work in Australia a new moniker in 2022: 54 reasons. The kids with whom we deal requested something approachable, pertinent, entertaining, and interesting. The 54 articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child served as the inspiration for the name. Our programmes continue to help kids and teenagers learn, develop, dream big, feel protected, and have support.
