About Company

It all began when Francesco Costa, an Italian winemaker from Salina, moved to Australia in order to generate money for his property. Prior to his departure for Italy in 1895, he worked in Melbourne, Colac, and Geelong.

Francesco's two eldest sons were sent away in 1903 because the vineyard could not support them. Joe, one of his sons, emigrated to Australia and made his home there. Tony, a different sibling, moved to Australia in 1926 to work for Joe. Tony established his own company in Warrnambool, a modest fruit shop, within a few years.

1937 marked a turning point for the Australian Costa company. In addition to partnering with Joe at Geelong Covent Garden, Tony married Mary Piccone.  The first Covent Garden grocery and fruit store was opened in 1888 by Mrs. Bourke, a Geelong local.

Tony and Mary became the sole proprietors of the fruit store in 1938. The company prospered, and twenty years later, Frank and Adrian, the elder sons of Tony and Mary, acquired the fruit shop from their parents and moved into the wholesale provedore industry.

The company kept expanding and evolving throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The business started delivering fresh fruit and vegetables to grocery chains after the addition of new partners Anthony, Kevin, and Robert. Gordon Avenue in Geelong became the new location for Costa Wholesale & Distribution.

By the 1980s, Werribee South, Shepparton, and Monbulk served as the company's distribution centres, and direct sales were conducted out of the Footscray Melbourne Wholesale Markets. Pre-packing, shipping, and interstate trading were all included in the business. The business was now among Australia's biggest wholesale suppliers of fresh produce and exporters of those items.
