The gold assets at Southern Cross, Leonora, and South Laverton in Western Australia were purchased by St. Barbara in March 2005 from Sons of Gwalia Limited's administrators. Just over a year later, the South Laverton and Meekatharra holdings were sold.

St. Barbara opened the high-grade Gwalia gold mine near Leonora in October 2008, then in mid-2011 it opened the King of the Hills mine to supply more feed to the Gwalia mill. From June 2011 until April 2015, King of the Hills was in operation and produced more than 225,000 ounces of gold. In 2015, Saracen Metals Pty Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of Saracen Mineral Holdings Ltd, purchased it.

St. Barbara ventured into Papua New Guinea in September 2012 when it acquired Allied Gold Mining Plc. This expanded St. Barbara's portfolio by including the gold operations at Simberi, Papua New Guinea, and Gold Ridge, Solomon Islands.

St. Barbara's Southern Cross Operation stopped running in December 2012. It was sold to Hanking Gold Mining Pty Ltd, a division of China Hanking Holdings Limited, in April 2013.

In April 2014, flooding and severe rain in the Solomon Islands forced the closure of Gold Ridge. Under certain mining and supply agreements, notices of force majeure were issued when it became clear that production could not be resumed because of circumstances beyond the operator's control. In May 2015, the Solomon Islands business connected to local landowners purchased the Gold Ridge Project.

St. Barbara recently expanded its global reach by purchasing Atlantic Gold Corporation and its assets in Nova Scotia, Canada, in July 2019.
