About Company

We administer Australia’s intellectual property (IP) rights system, specifically trade marks, patents, designs and plant breeder’s rights.

Today, IP Australia, the direct descendant of the Patent Office, has grown significantly and receives many thousands of applications per year for patents, trade marks and designs and plant breeder’s rights.

Our goal is to have a world-class IP system that increases Australia's prosperity. As a listed entity under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, we are a part of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources but manage our finances separately and have some degree of autonomy in other areas.  Our pastor is the The Corporate Plan lays out our strategy for 2020–21 and outlines how we'll keep up with fulfilling our promises to the Australian Government and the general public. In accordance with Section 45 of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act of 2013 (PGPA Act) and Section 17 of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act Rule 2014, the Director General, as the accountable authority for IP Australia, has established IP Australia's Audit Committee (PGPA Rule). The Audit Committee Charter outlines the committee's goals, scope of jurisdiction, membership and tenure, functions and responsibilities, reporting requirements, and administrative setup.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality advice to IP Australia’s business groups and external stakeholders on routine
  • FOI and information access matters (for e.g. under the Trade Marks Act 1995, Patents Act
  • 1990, Plant Breeder’s Rights Act 1994, Privacy Act 1988 and the Designs Act 2003);
  • Assist with decision making (collecting documents, reviewing documents and preparing correspondence) on routine FOI and information access matters;
  • Work collaboratively and under limited direction to balance competing priorities, interpret
  • legislation and policy within legislated timeframes;
  • Liaise with the Office of the Information Commissioner (OAIC) in relation to its review of IP
  • Australia’s FOI decisions where required;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date files and records;
  • Assist with the management and publication of IP Australia’s FOI Disclosure Log;
  • Have well-developed analytical skills and acumen, coupled with a strong level of strategic awareness to recognise links between interconnected issues;
  • Assist with FOI reporting to IP Australia’s Executive, the OAIC and other stakeholders as required;
  • Build productive working relationships within IP Australia and with IP Australia’s external stakeholders;
  • Demonstrate attitudes and behaviours responsive to workplace change (including participates in and encourages others to participate in change and contribute to successful outcomes);
  • Improve organisational performance through effective engagement with, and management of, risk within relevant sphere of influence;
  • Establish clear expectations and create an environment to achieve stated goals and objectives, taking ownership and honouring commitments; and
  • Maintain an understanding of their/worker responsibilities under the Work Health & Safety Act 2011 and a commitment to promoting a healthy and safe workplace

Job Requirement

  • Highly developed organisational skills including the ability to prioritise and collaborate with others to achieve deadlines;
  • Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills at all levels; and
  • Proficient liaison and negotiation skills
  • Previous FOI experience is highly desirable
